Flavored Salvia Extracts a Hot New TrendWe have noticed an increasing trend among Salvia Extract manufacturers to flavor their extracts. While some are attempting to use regular food flavorings - a crude attempt with little chance for success - others are adopting more sophisticated approaches, with scents uniquely tailored to survive combustion (burning of the extract). As the industry matures, it is natural for customers to demand more product choices and features, and as such, flavored Salvia Extracts are here to stay. Nevertheless, as the original flavored Salvia Extract manufacturers, who first brought the concept of flavored extracts to market, we thought we would spend a little time discussing the myths and facts of flavored Salvia.
Myth: I can flavor my own Salvia at home with grocery store flavoring.
Fact: Be our guest, and prepare to fail. Grocery store flavoring is designed for cooking - in cookies, pies and other edible foods. It is often alcohol-water based, which may end up stripping your finely prepared, expensive extract of salvinorins and leave an inferior product behind. Beyond that, however, you simply will not get it to work. The flavoring is not designed to survive the heat of combustion (when you burn the leaf), so you'll end up tasting or smelling nothing, or worse. In addition, while some of the grocery store flavorings are perfectly safe to use with food - they are edible - upon combustion (burning) they may go under a chemical change that renders them dangerous to your health.
Myth: Flavored Salvia tastes exactly like fruit.
Fact: Unfortunately not. Our flavors impart a unique combination of smell and taste that resembles certain kinds of scents - in our case, apple, strawberry and spearmint - but you should not be expecting a flavor explosion in your mouth. The scent will mask the harshness you'll get at the back of your throat with regular Salvia Extract. In general, the smoke will be smoother, with a subtle hint of scented fruit. We are currently into our second generation flavoring. Perhaps with future generations we'll be able to offer you a true "just like fruit" experience.
Myth: All flavored Salvia is the same.
Fact: As the original manufacturers of Flavored Salvia, we beg to differ! We're currently into our second generation flavoring, meaning that we've taken a number of steps to improve the formula, how we actually apply the flavoring to the Salvia, how we dry the extract, and the ways in which we store and package it to best preserve the scents. As we've learned, this is not knowledge someone can simply gain overnight. Quality Salvia flavoring requires specific knowledge and a heck of a lot of trial and error, not merely to get it just right, but to keep improving the flavoring and the final product. We are ready to compare our flavored Salvia with anyone's in total product quality and customer satisfaction.
As a growing trend among Salvia manufacturers, flavored Salvia Extracts are here to stay. That doesn't mean they are all the same, or that just anyone can bring a quality flavored Salvia product to market. We hope this article has taught you a bit about flavored Salvia Extracts. It definitely addresses three of the most common myths we hear about them at BHB. If you have any further questions, be sure to email them to us. Who knows, maybe your question, and the answer, will make it into an update of this article.
